The New Moon

We'll see how long this posting streak can run here. I'm intent upon writing every day and in order to keep up with all the writing opportunities I have in Detroit, I have to. Ill be sharing time between Detroit As A Portal and our baby blog, Aya Rising. Both have been quiet, but we're changing that.

This first new moon of August was incredibly settling for us. It was about as decadent as it gets for us these days. We decided not to attend the Chicago/Michigan Burning Man Decompression this weekend and took the weekend off from the Market due to my Mac crash, so we had time to sit together and reflect a bit on the past few months. Sometimes we're so in "it" that we loose grounding and the ability to see the big picture. This weekend allowed us to ground and boy did we need it!

This is one of those points that I've struggled with repeatedly on my path. It's also the reason why I always try to convey the importance of grounding in class. It is vital to take your awareness WAY out to your fingers and toes and that we really try to "be" in our entire bodies. While this is true, it is also true that being mindful is a process rather than a concrete state of mind. The ability to know the place, state and characteristics of ones awareness is the next level of being aware.

Recognition and knowledge of the fluctuations of ones awareness without judgement seems at this point to be the task at hand for many of us, Angela and I certainly included.

And It Just Keeps Getting Better!

Robocop and I exchanged presents today and WOW! did I make out grand. Last year, my New Year's resolution was to get a banjo and learn to play it so I could wander around the playa entertaining folks. Well, obviously I didn't do that and it was getting under my skin that 2007 was coming around and I didn't get that banjo. But now, thanks to Robocop (with a little assistance from Xian) my vision is fulfilled. I have a week before 2007 to learn to play a song on the banjo so that I can achieve my resolution for the benefit of myself and the world at large. You see, the banjo and accordion are going to save the world. One more step towards liberation. Thanks Robo!

The Demise of La Contessa

Though folks are debating whether this is actually true or not, I feel that this is, in fact, the case. The playa priate ship, La Contessa, has been burnt to a crisp. Rumor has it that the folks who were storing it wanted it removed and threatened to burn it if it wasn't. A damn shame that it's gone as it was one of those "did I see what I just think I saw" aspects of the playa for virgins. But, it calls upon us to step up and turn our creativity up to 11.

Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade Photos

This parade was the grand marshal of the best long weekend of my life. The Lab is a block away from the parade route, so why not, right? The weather was incredible! I got all dolled up and headed out to see if I could find the Burning Man vibe in the hearts and minds of Detroiters. I walked through the crowd screaming that I didn't get the memo about the ladders and asking everyone if they brought scissors to emancipate the poor balloons. I explained that if thirty of us bum-rush the balloon handlers we could make it happen and solicited pledges from folks that they would certainly bring scissors next year. Everyone loved the fact that I kept asking if that was Kwame dressed as a wrestler riding the back of Clifford the Big Red Dog! We were so done up the police let us cross the line and become a part of the parade for a while. Speaking of the police, not to mention all the parade workers, I walked up to everyone of them I saw and personally thanked them for helping to make all these people happy. As I approached in my long black dress, fur vest and cowboy hat they'd look a bit concerned but my gratitude won them over and they were all smiles by the time I walked away. I seriously can't want for next years parade. Bring your scissors folks, even though it's a parade there's still a revolution going down!

Here are just a few of the photos taken:

A Little Ditty About Burning Man

Well, as you can tell I'm catching up on info posts here. This track made me chuckle. Though I'm not a veteran that goes back to the gun days at burning man, I can feel this guy's pain.

Sweet Jumps!

The Vikings created a new pastime on the playa this year: sweet jumps! These insane heroics would take place after staying up all night having the time of our lives. To those of you who are concerned, no playa was damaged during the making of sweet jumps.

More playa video to follow.

Michigan Decompression

The Chicago Vikings will be bringing Ragnarok (our veggie oil bus) to Detroit this weekend for the Michigan Decompression. It's going to be off the hook. Nothing can save you when the Chicago and Detroit Vikings get together. There's going to be a ton of fire, that much is true.

Burning Man Photos

I swear I'm really in the process of pulling together all the photos from BRC 2006. I've been gathering together all the RFV kids photos and will be putting them all up in a central location for you all to check out. There is just so much going on at the moment. I'm getting settled into my new position at IMI and I'm also getting the Renegade Reality Lab up to snuff for the workshops, classes and movie nights that will debut in October. There are also the Chicago and Detroit decompression parties on the horizon. Busy busy.

Last night, I finally got around to watching Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst. I've been meaning to watch this for a few years now and it was well done. The first movie night at Renegade Reality Lab will be a double feature of Guerrilla and The Weather Underground with a discussion following about domestic terrorism. I think that it is high time that folks realize that there was a serious revolution going on in America during the late 60s and early 70s. I'll announce the date of this movie night soon. It'll probably be on a Sunday evening.

Alright, I'm turning in for the night. More to come, as always. Keep gunning for Wide Eyed Awe! ~Renegade

A Wednesday Morn On The Playa, photo by K.C.

I came to as the sound of a marching band came in and out. I knew not who or where I was. As the melodies of the band became more apparent and more focused I remembered that I was on the playa, my name was renegade and that I was sleeping on a hammock in Camp Radio Free Valhalla underneath our geodesic dome. I was naked in my sleeping bag and the edges of the bag were pulled up over my eyes to block out the evil star. This all made sense, but the music of a marching band didn't and as I became more aware of myself I realized that the music was all around me and close! I shyly pulled down the covers to see a 15 person marching band standing all around my hammock and a 6'2" transvestite lovingly dancing around me. I smiled sang a chorus of Roll Out The Barrels and thanked the world for another unforgettable chance wake up call to wide eyed awe on the playa.

The Road To Black Rock City

It's day two on the road. Between the seven of us we've been pretty much non-stop on the trail. About every four hours we stop to refill the tank with veggie oil and switch drivers. We've been running on veggie since we threw the switch in Chicago. The longest we've turned off the ignition has been a half an hour and the engine has still been warm enough upon our return to stay on veggie. The refill process is becoming routine though we did manage to spill about a half gallon on oil in the back of the bus on our first attempt. We started with four 55 gallon drums and are now on the second one. To fill up we open up the back of the bus and run a hose from the drum to the fuel tank. There's a hand pump in the drum and when it is cranked it moves the veggie oil from the drum into the fuel tank. It's a messy process and we are all soaked in oil at this point. The good news is well be the most well oiled boys on the playa when we arrive.

Ragnarok is extremely comfortable. We've three couches, a swivel chair, and a table that can sit four. It's more than enough room for the seven of us. All of the camp gear is on the top roof rack and in the back half of the bus with the drums of veggie. For those of you who have not been on the playa it may seem odd but we've eliminated most bathroom stops by pissing into a large water bottle at the front entrance of the bus. This, of course is standard procedure on the playa if its late at night and you don't want to trek to the johnny on the spot. I learned how to lean into the front seat the last time I was pissing after falling into the doors of the bus. Good thing the latch on the doors is pretty stable as I would have gone flying out onto I-80 with my pants around my ankles.

I bought the bus a little fridge that plugs into the cigarette lighter and though we've had a rough time getting all our various cigarette lighter devices up and running at the same time, the fridge has managed to allow for cold beer and red bull while we're on the road. We have a nice collection of comfort items as well. There are a few Ganeshas, the laptop I'm writing on, iPods galore, chess, checkers backgammon, a handful of good books and a few really nice cycling globe lights that provide a sweet ambiance in the night. I've had my new digital camera out and snapping continuously. I'll do my damnedest to get some pictures online soon.

The crew on the bus are simply the best. There's Bucky, Alex, Matty, Jason, King, John and me. Everyone's got a great work ethic and we've been operating like a tight pit crew every time we stop to refill. You can cut the camaraderie with a knife. Everyone is so thrilled that you can almost always catch one of us looking about in awe. We're living the fuckin' dream right now and it shows no sign of letting up anytime soon. We're already plotting next year's playa exploits. The guns keep getting bigger, the mission more vital, and the tower more pronounced on the horizon.

So we're way ahead of schedule at this point and depending on how the bus runs when we get into the mountains we'll actually be able to get a motel room in reno and get a little R and R before hitting the playa. We're kickin' ass here kids. When we hit the playa we've going to get straight to work on setting up our 30' dome. We may have the camp all ready by the time the rest of the kids roll in on Sunday. I'll check in with the Rangers and set up my mentored shifts and then get my Rangering schedule for the rest of the week. I'm going to do the minimum as far as shifts go as I want to spend as much time running about with the Vikings as possible. I'm going to try and work a few shifts at the Sanctuary and will have a blast working when they burn the man on Saturday night.

Alright, there we are at the moment. We just recently rolled into mountain time zone. Our next stop will be Cheyenne, which is half way there! I'll try to get this posted ASAP but that depends on our stopping at a place with a wireless connection and that's just not a priority. Many thanks and much love to all those who are still at home. You have no idea how much we wish you were here with us and no idea how we're going to ride you to get to Black Rock City next year.

In love and light,
~Renegade

In Chicago, Next Stop I-80

Left Detroit at 8:00 this morning. Thanks to everyone who came out to see me off last night. Good times. Of course I didn't finish packing until 6:30 AM or so. I kind of poured myself into the Megabus and slept the whole way to Union Station. Bucky picked me up and we hit the bus to go pick up the veggie oil. We learned a vaualble lesson as we ran out of diesel on the way there and had to go through the routine of getting the air out of the fuel lines. We got the oil and are now about to hit the road. Love and light to you all. ~G
