DIY Vegan Holiday Class this Sat, Detroit Evolution at MOCAD!

December Evolve Detroit

Local-lujah!

"When you are already in Detroit, you don't have to take a bus to get there."
~ Ram Dass

“Maybe that’s the ultimate take-away from a class at Detroit Evolution: seeing food not as a commodity but as a relationship with the earth, as an individual and a community, one not to be approached without a conscience.”
~Michael Jackman, Metrotimes

Greetings Detroit and all who grace us here!
Welcome to our early December Evolve Detroit. Angela & I thank you for taking a moment to check out our work and current offerings. We're sharing some exciting classes and are involved in some awesome events in the next couple of weeks. We hope you'll be able to join us.

Our Vegan Holiday Class is this Saturday December 12th and we still have a few spaces available. Angela just finished up the menu for this one. She'll show us how to prepare Roasted Red Pepper and Artichoke Tepenade Stuffed Mushrooms with homemade Walnut Parmesan, Polenta Cakes with Grilled Tofu, Onions and Spinach and topped with a light Cream Sauce, Gratitude Salad with Kale, Butternut Squash and Spiced Cranberry Dressing and a Raw Pecan Pie with Whipped Topping. We'll end class by sampling this healthy and tasty feast! Seating is limited for this class so please RSVP asap. All of the details are below.

We're also beginning to fill our very special New Year's Day Live Raw Yoga Music Brunch. These Yoga/Raw Foods events are experiential journeys where like minded folk come together and share. Dixon's Violin accompaniment to our yoga session and the following Raw Foods feast will be a beautiful and inspiring way to ring in the new year. Please consider joining us for this celebration. You can read more about this event and RSVP below.

Angela and I have also been doing a great deal of visioning and retooling in the last few weeks. We're refining our mission statement and creating a new infrastructure for Detroit Evolution. We'll be talking about this new vision and the Transition Movement at the first of two events at MOCAD this month. We're honored to be a part of Model D's Speaker Series: Green Initiatives Detroit! on December 16th. The event is free, but you need to rsvp to attend. We'll also be at MOCAD on Sunday the 20th for their Family Day. We'll be talking about the benefits of eating raw and offering two Raw Food demonstrations that both kids and adults will love. There are more details on both of these MOCAD events below.

I also want to remind you that Detroit Abides, our free movie night in Eastern Market will take a break for December. We'll look forward to joining you in Shed 5, amongst the pallets of potatoes, again in January.

Please give yourself a moment to take in the info we've gathered together this time around. We appreciate your forwarding this on to a few like minded or curious folks who would enjoy Evolve Detroit. We're already putting together a special Winter Solstice Edition to express our gratitude and share our vision for Detroit Evolution in 2010. During this busy time of year please know that Angela, Aya Eden and I send our blessings to you and yours!

Detroit Abides takes December Off!
I want to thank everyone who came out to Eastern Market for our November Detroit Abides! It was quite an event. Over 70 people came together amidst pallets of potatoes and forklifts to watch Rev. Billy & the Church of Stop Shopping's hilarious and illuminating "What Would Jesus Buy?" We often tackle "heavy" topics every Third Wednesday, so this time around it was great to hear booming laughter fill Shed 5. We will be taking December off and will return to Shed 5 in January with another Free film focused upon Sustainability.

Our Going Local Guide is very much a work in progress and more shops/people will be added as we go. If we're missing something or someone please drop Gregg an email with your suggestions, gregg@detroitevolution.com

USSF 2010

US Social Forum
Detroit, June 22-26, 2010
The US Social Forum is a movement building process. It is not a conference but it is a space to come up with the peoples’ solutions to the economic and ecological crisis. The USSF is the next most important step in our struggle to build a powerful multi-racial, multi-sectoral, inter-generational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that transforms this country, and changes history. We must declare what we want our world to look like and we must start planning the path to get there. The USSF provides spaces to learn from each other’s experiences and struggles, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, build relationships, and align with our international brothers and sisters to strategize how to reclaim our world.

The purpose of the USSF is to effectively and affirmatively articulate the values and strategies of a growing and vibrant movement for justice in the United States. Those who build towards and participate in the USSF are no longer interested in simply stating what social justice movements “stand-against,” rather we see ourselves as part of new movements that reach beyond national borders, that practice democracy at all levels, and understand that neo-liberalism abroad and here in the US is not the solution. The USSF provides a first major step towards such articulation of what we stand for.
